ECU's Maness Earns Second Preseason Honor

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina pitcher Seth Maness picked up his second preseason honor Tuesday afternoon when he was named second-team preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Maness was named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player-of-the-Year Award Pre-Season Watch List last week by the College of Baseball Foundation.

The Pinehurst, N.C. native, who was named Conference USA Freshman-of-the-Year in 2008, had one of the best freshman seasons in school history after posting a 9-2 record with a 3.27 ERA and 81 strikeouts with just 20 walks in 98.1 pitched. Maness became just the second freshmen in ECU history to win nine games (Mickey Britt, 1977).

Maness became one of the most decorated Pirates in school history after being named to five All-America teams, three of those coming as a freshman. He joined former Pirate greats Cory Scott (2000) and Greg Bunn (2004) as the only players in school history to be selected to five all-america teams in the same season.

The Pirates will begin spring practice on Friday, Feb. 1 in preparation for the season opener against Monmouth on Feb. 20, 2009.
