HALIFAX COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A portion of a highway that was closed for over an hour has been reopened following a vehicle fire and car crash.
Trooper R.P. Dennis says the accident happened on I-95 north, south of Roanoke Rapids, near the 163 and a half mile marker.
The initial emergency call came in just before 6:30 p.m.
Dennis says a woman was driving a silver Toyota north on I-95 when she crossed into the left lane, went off the side of the roadway and hit several trees.
The woman's car caught fire. Dennis says someone stopped to help her escape the burning car because she became stuck.
She was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Dennis says the woman did not hit her brakes, but an exact cause of the accident is still being investigated.
The Enfield Volunteer Fire Company and the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene. It took roughly 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.
