Log Truck Driver Now Charged With DWI In Fatal Hit And Run

The Highway Patrol has now charged the man accused in a deadly hit and run with driving while impaired while operating a commercial motor vehicle.

First Sergeant Jeff Gordon said seven-year-old Alyiah Morgan of Harrells was killed Tuesday afternoon as she was getting off a Sampson County school bus.

Troopers said 37-year-old Johnny Spell has been arrested for the wreck. The Roseboro man was initially charged with felony passing a stopped school bus, felony hit and run, and involuntary manslaughter.

Sampson County deputies said they got a tip that Spell and his vehicle were at 2834 Hayne Stretch Road in Autryville.

Spell was arrested and put in the Sampson County Jail. A judge set his bond during a first appearance this morning at $202,500.

Alyiah was a first grader at Union Elementary School.

The Highway patrol says a 37-year-old Roseboro man has been identified as the driver of the tractor trailer involved in fatal accident Tuesday afternoon in Sampson County that killed a student getting off a school bus. They say Johnny Spell of 192 Bud Spell Lane, Roseboro in Sampson County is in custody, but has not been charged yet.

The identity of the deceased child is not being released at this time pending next of kin notification.

The investigation is on-going. Troopers will be consulting with Sampson County District Attorneys Office to discuss possible charges.

The Highway Patrol says the driver and tractor trailer involved in a fatal hit and run Tuesday afternoon has been located near the town of Autryville in Sampson County, about 40 miles from the accident scene in Harrells on Highway 421 where a child was killed getting off a school bus.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and have not released the driver's name.

State troopers are looking for a log truck that struck and killed a child getting off a school bus this afternoon and kept going.

The Highway Patrol says the accident happened on Highway 421 near Harrells in Sampson County around 3:30 p.m.

They say the bus stopped with its emergency equipment activated and the student was getting off the bus. Troopers say the log truck was also heading south and passed the stopped bus, striking the child. The big rig did not stop.
