A high school teacher has been charged after authorities say his loaded gun was found at school.

Duplin County Schools says it happened Wednesday when an East Duplin High School student found a laptop bag with a gun inside.

A school resource officer retrieved the bag and weapon, while the school system says the teacher had inadvertently left the weapon inside.

David Lee of Beulaville, an auto mechanics teacher, has been charged with carrying a weapon on campus, according to Sheriff Blake Wallace.

Wallace says the gun was loaded and found in the teacher's classroom.

The 47-year-old Lee has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the school system. He was released on a $2,000 bond.
