Tarboro native Todd Gurley selected 10th in NFL draft by the Rams

The St. Louis Rams have taken Georgia running back Todd Gurley, a native of Tarboro, with the 10th overall pick of the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-1, 226-pound Gurley is the first running back taken in the first round since 2012.

The Rams opted to get backfield help for new quarterback Nick Foles instead of addressing a thin offensive line. Gurley is coming off knee surgery last November after being suspended for four games earlier in the season for a violation of NCAA rules.

Gurley was a three-sport star in football, track and basketball at Tarboro.

As a senior in 2011, he was the North Carolina Associated Press Player of the Year after totalling 2,600 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Gurley also helped Tarboro win the 2A North Carolina state championship.
