TEACHER OF THE WEEK: Jorge Benitez, From Havelock High School

Jorge Benitez is the 'Teacher of the Week' for Wednesday, October 10, 2012.

Jorge is the Director of Bands and Senior Success Coordinator at Havelock High School in Craven County.

He has been the Director of Bands since 1994 and currently directs approximately 200 students per year in many different groups, including Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Indoor Guard and Indoor percussion.

Jorge is a graduate of ECU and holds both a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music education.

Jorge has also served in the North Carolina Army National Guard for ten years and has served in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. He served for seven years as a military policeman and completed his military career with the 440th Army National Guard Band.

He has received many awards. His bands and his students have great success.

“Music has the ability to transform life’s emotions." Jorge says. "The notes on the page are just the beginning. Music is so much more. Teaching music makes life very fulfilling, it’s a great way to live your life.”

Jorge and his wife Lyn have three children.
