Town officials encourage property owners to inspect decks following second collapse

By  |

The town of Emerald Isle is encouraging property owners to take inventory of their decks after a second one collapsed in a matter of weeks.

The only person hospitalized in Monday's deck collapse has been released after being treated. Town Manager Frank Rush says the 62-year-old woman vacationer suffered multiple foot fractures.

Nine people were on the deck at the Ocean Drive home Monday night when it fell some five feet.

Rush says a preliminary investigation shows that the deck separated from the house because of rotten wood and deteriorated fasteners. He said the last time a permit was issued for work on the deck was 11 years ago.

While some are calling on the town to require inspections, Rush says they do not have the authority.

"We're just trying to make people more aware of this and encourage our property owners, not just our vacation property owners, but all of our property owners... to just take time and check your decks."

It's the second deck collapse in Emerald Isle in the past 5 weeks. Back on July 4th, 24 people were hospitalized when a deck down the street fell some 14 feet. In that collapse, a report indicated corroded nails were the issue.
