TARBORO, NC (WITN) - Firemen from five different fire departments spent several hours battling a fire at a historic plantation house in Edgecombe County Sunday.
Tarboro Fire Chief Frankie Winslow says the emergency call came in around 12:55 p.m.
The Barracks house is located at 1100 Albermarle Avenue in Tarboro.
Winslow says the fire started in back of the building, which has been around since the 1800s. The fire quickly got out of control and required aid from Legget, Princeville, West Edgecombe, Heartseas, and Rocky Mount fire departments.
While there is some smoke and structural damage, Winslow believes the house can be restored and remodeled. Winslow says the owner is currently in Florida.
The fire appears to be accidental, but officials will be back out to investigate further Monday.
The scene wasn't cleared until roughly 7:45 p.m.
