Pitt County child rape suspect makes court appearance

A Pitt County man, accused of sex offenses involving two girls, went before a judge this morning who kept his bond at $3.1 million.

Martin Vasquez had less than a day of freedom when deputies re-arrested him Thursday afternoon on new charges which include indecent liberties with a minor. Authorities say this is a different victim from his previous arrest and that the offenses happened between January 2013 and July 2014..

The 47-year-old man was let out on bond Wednesday for charges brought in February after authorities say he was caught by a probation officer raping the six-year-old in a shed behind his house.

Vasquez was initially charged with rape of a child and indecent liberties with a child. His bond was originally $3 million.

Court records show one district judge issued a notice of his intention to modify his bond. The man's attorney then asked another district judge to follow through and reduce his bond, which was done Wednesday.

The District Attorney's Office was opposed to any modification.

The jail says he posted a $100,000 bond on Wednesday and was subject to house arrest and electronic monitoring.

Just before 1:00 p.m. Thursday the man was brought back to the jail on the new charges.

In addition to the indecent liberties count, Vasquez now faces six counts of disseminating obscenity. Deputies say the victim in the latest case was under the age of 16.

During a first appearance Friday morning, Judge Lee Teague kept his bond at $3.1 million. The judge told Vasquez that if he is convicted on the latest charges he could face up to 42 years in prison.
