Former deputy charged in hit & run death of girlfriend

A former deputy sheriff has been charged with hitting his former girlfriend with a vehicle, killing her.

Wilson police say the hit and run happened around 3:00 a.m. Sunday in the 2600 block of Airport Boulevard. Ashley Wassilchalk, a mother of two boys, was killed in the crash.

Police say Brian Knight has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, felony hit and run, and DWI.

The 27-year-old Knight was a deputy for the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, but resigned earlier this year.

Police say an autopsy on the victim and a search warrant on the man's vehicle is being conducted today. Police have not said how they tied Knight to the woman's death.

Knight has since been released from jail, while Wassilchalk's funeral will be at 2:00 p.m Thursday at Joyner's Funeral Home in Wilson.
