Fifth grader accused of shooting multiple kids with air gun at bus stop

Authorities say a fifth grader used an air gun to shoot multiple children at a school bus stop Friday morning.

Pitt County Schools spokesman Brock Letchworth says it happened in a neighborhood off Concord Drive in Greenville Friday morning.

Letchworth says the student attended Wintergreen Intermediate School. He said four students were hit Friday morning, while four others were struck on previous days.

Air guns fire projectiles made of plastic, aluminum and other materials.

GPD spokeswoman Kristen Hunter says the 11-year-old was taken into custody and will be placed in the juvenile system. She said officers became aware of the problem Friday morning after a parent called them.

The school system confirms they were contacted about the previous shootings, but say they couldn't do much since it was not on school property.

The gun was not taken to school, according to police.

The property owner told WITN the fifth grader's family lives near the bus stop and will be evicted.
