A busy Greenville thoroughfare has reopened after an intense car fire Thursday afternoon closed the southbound lanes.
The car fire shut down North Memorial Drive traffic coming from the airport.
Greenville Fire-Rescue says a father and his eight year old son were in the Lincoln Town Car when they noticed it smoking. They pulled over to the shoulder and safely got out.
Both were taken to Vidant Medical Center as a precaution.
The fire department believes a mechanical problem caused the fire.
Police were able to reopen one southbound lane, and by 5:00 p.m. all lanes reopened to traffic.
