Funeral Monday For Havelock Woman Who Died In Fatal Crash Into Creek

The funeral for Janie Queen of Havelock takes was Monday.

Queen died Thursday when she crashed her car into Slocum Creek off Church Road. Her obituary says the 20 year old was the Student Council President at Havelock High and a cheerleader before she graduated in 2010, and was a student at UNC-Wilmington.

Since the wreck, dozens of people stopped to show their respects at Slocum Creek. Police say when the Havelock High School graduate drove her white Toyota into the creek, several men tried to pull her out, but it was too late.

Havelock police have now identified the woman killed yesterday after her car ran into Slocum Creek.

Police say a preliminary investigation shows 20-year-old Janie Queen of Havelock drowned in the accident.

Authorities say the cause of the accident is still under investigation. Her vehicle ran off of Church Road near the bridge and submerged in about 20 feet of water.

A woman was killed this afternoon when her vehicle ran off a Havelock street and into Slocum Creek.

Havelock spokeswoman Diane Miller tells WITN News that the victim's body was pulled out around 3:50 p.m.

She says the woman was traveling down Church Road when her vehicle went into the creek just before the bridge. Four bystanders jumped into the creek in efforts to save the woman, but were not successful.

A dive team from Atlantic Beach went into the water to make sure no one else was in the car. Workers at 4:00 p.m. were in the process of pulling out the vehicle from the creek.

Authorities say one person in confirmed inside the vehicle. It happened at the Church Road Bridge in Havelock.

A city spokeswoman says the vehicle was heading toward Atlantic Beach in a bend and went off the road into the creek.

The Atlantic Beach Dive Team is currently on the scene.
