Elizabeth City officials say about 600 electric customers are receiving corrected bills because they were overcharged.
City manager Rich Olson tells The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City the mistake involved mostly residential customers in a certain area, although some nearby businesses also were overcharged.
Customer bills shared with The Daily Advance show that the usage column for November's bill is correct. That bill covers electricity used in the prior month. However, in December's bill, customers' usage equals that from November and October.
In a memo to the city council, Olson says the mistake occurred because employees read meters early before city offices closed for the holiday season. He says the city has sent corrected bills.
