FARMVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - With the high school football season just 16 days away, the Eastern Plains 2A Conference held its annual media day Wednesday morning at Farmville Central High School.
SouthWest Edgecombe was a unanimous pick by the head coaches to win the conference this season.
J.C. Cobb enters his seventh season in charge of the Cougars, and he's managed to build quite the program. His team finished 11-3 overall and 5-0 in conference last season, losing in the third round of the 2AA state playoffs to North Davidson.
The Cougars return eight starters on offense, including star wide receiver Keishon Porter.
However, Cobb has just five starters returning on defense, and he says that's his main focus during preseason camp.
"Offensively, we have a lot returning, and we could line up tomorrow and be ready to play," said Cobb. "Defensively it's another story. We have a lot of young kids that are up from the JV that we have to rely on. It's going to be a process to teach them what they need to know for them to get the experience to set us up when conference play comes around to be successful."
The Cougars open their 2019 season at home against North Edgecombe on Thursday, August 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
