CHOCOWINITY, N.C. (WITN) - Under new head coach Ron Cook, the Pamlico County Hurricanes are hungry to make another trip to the 1A state championship game.
The Hurricanes finished 13-2 last year, falling in the 1A state title game to Murphy, 60-27.
Cook returns five players on offensive and five players on defense.
Former WITN Pepsi Player of the Week Savone "Tank" Tutt is a key returner who is sure to have a big season once again for the Hurricanes.
According to Cook, this year's team plays hard and tough and is fundamentally sound, but he expects a target on his team's back after all the success last season.
Pamlico County will have six seniors on its 2019 team, and according to Cook, the focus right now is on special teams.
"It's hard to find improvements for a team that won 13 games and went to a state championship, but I think that's one of the things that we definitely can improve on from last year, and we are working on that," said new head coach Ron Cook at media day Wednesday. "That's just been my whole career. Always big on that third of the game, so we're going to be much better on special teams."
The Hurricanes open the season at home against the Princeton Bulldogs on Friday, August 23 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
