AYDEN, N.C. (WITN) - Our WITN EndZone Preview series continued Friday with a visit to Paul Cornwell and his Ayden-Grifton Chargers.
Cornwell enters his 15th season in charge of the Chargers as this year's team will try and replace playmakers like running back and linebacker Ray Darden, as well as three-year starting quarterback Blake McLawhorn. Both former WITN Pepsi Players of the Week graduated this past spring.
But according to Cornwell ahead of practice Friday night, he likes the look of his team heading into the new season.
"Well, I think we have a great group of kids," said Cornwell before practice Friday. "They've worked hard. We have some returning guys who have some experience and a good group of young guys, so we like the mix, and we're excited to get started."
The Chargers open the 2019 season at home against the Southside Seahawks on Friday, August 23 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
