UConn sweeps ECU Softball in series finale, 8-4
Connecticut completed the series sweep of East Carolina Sunday afternoon with an 8-4 victory at the ECU Softball Stadium.
The Pirates drop to 21-29 overall and 3-15 in American Athletic Conference play with one series remaining in the regular season. The Huskies improved to 19-27 and 7-11.
Whitney Sanford (7-11) was the losing pitcher, surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Katie Koshes (6-7) tossed 6.1 innings in the victory, allowing four runs on five hits with six walks and three strikeouts.
Courtney Layton led the ECU offense with two hits while Rachel McCollum drove in three runs with her seventh home run of the campaign. Reese Guevarra and Alexis Lemus each recorded two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the top of the third, loading the bases with no outs before a Carli Cutler sacrifice fly made it 1-0. The Pirates answered in the home half of the frame when Tyler King tripled with one out and scored on an Ashleigh Inae sac fly.
Connecticut broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs on four hits and an East Carolina error. After the Huskies added a run in the top of the seventh via a Guevarra RBI single, McCollum hit a three-run homer to draw the Pirates within four runs. ECU then loaded the bases with three walks and brought the tying run to the plate. However, a strikeout ended the contest.
ECU completes the regular season next weekend with a three-game AAC series at Houston.
