Traveon Freshwater, ECU football's highly touted four-star recruit of the 2019 class, went through his first practice Friday after officially being admitted to East Carolina University.

"What a great kid, that's the first thing," said first-year head coach Mike Houston at practice Friday. "He's been working very, very hard to take care of his business to make sure he could be here with us. There's a lot of people here that worked very, very hard to make sure that he was here with us. We're just happy to have him on our roster."

The graduate of Northeastern High School (Elizabeth City, N.C.) and former WITN Pepsi Player of the Week wore a No. 49 jersey on the first day of preseason camp.

Freshwater accomplished whatever necessary to be eligible for the fall semester, but head coach Mike Houston said that the expected standout on the defensive line is still "working through some stuff."

"It's one of those things where today was our first day with us, so he's kind of drinking out of a fire hydrant right now," added Houston. "But it's good to have him in the program. We look forward to having him with us for the next several years."

Houston added that Freshwater is eligible to practice, admitted to ECU, but there is still work to be done with the NCAA.
