Three Pirates Earn AAC Women’s Soccer Weekly Honors
Providence, R.I. – For the first time in program history, three members of the ECU women’s soccer team earned American Athletic Conference weekly honors as announced by league officials Monday morning. Michelle Newhouse earned her second Goalkeeper of the Week honor this season while Courtney Cash and freshman Kim Sanford were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
It marks the first time in program history that the Pirates have had more than two weekly award winners. On Sept. 29, 2014, Lana Spitler was named Offensive Player of the Week and Erica Lens was named Goalkeeper of the week.
Newhouse earned a 1-0-1 record in two games last week for the Pirates. She played all 200 minutes allowing one goal and making 11 saves including a career-high eight saves in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with No. 5 Virginia. Newhouse becomes the first player this season to win multiple Goalkeeper of the Week accolades for the AAC and the third player to do so for ECU since the Pirates joined the league in 2014.
Cash scored three goals for ECU including the game-tying goal in the 84th minute against the fifth-ranked Cavaliers on Sunday. Her second of two goals against UNCW served as the game-winning goal against the Seahawks.
Sanford’s first AAC weekly honor comes after a week in which she helped the Pirates post their fourth shutout of the season. She played all 200 minutes over the two-game stretch and tallied her first-career goal and assist in ECU’s win over UNCW.
