Player of the Week: Trey McLawhorn

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – Parrott Academy senior football, basketball and baseball standout Trey McLawhorn is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!

After starting the season with back-to-back losses, the Parrott Academy football team has all of a sudden rolled off three straight wins, including a 50-26 win over John Paul II this past Friday.

Behind the Patriots' recent turnaround is the leadership and stellar play of senior running back, Trey McLawhorn.

"The line made a lot of big holes and stuff, so it was easy to run the ball, it was easy to see the field," said McLawhorn when asked about his performance against the Saints. "The blocking was really good. It was phenomenal. It was the best we've had all year."

McLawhorn amassed nearly 300 yards of total offense against the Saints, rushing for 155 yards and two touchdowns, while also registering 129 receiving yards and two more touchdowns.

"He outworks everybody," said Parrott Academy head football coach Matt Beaman. "He's a kid who lives in the weight room, and I think that really showed tonight. His physicality. Like you said, he was a man among boys tonight."

A four-year starter on the Patriots' varsity football team, McLawhorn also excels on the diamond and on the hardwood.

"Deep down, he's a dog," added Beaman. "He wants to win. He's going to do whatever it takes to win, and you really appreciate that about him."

"The goal is a state championship every year," exclaimed McLawhorn. "We have a winning tradition, and I want to continue that legacy and go out with a win."

McLawhorn uses faith to carry him through life, and that includes on the football field. In four games played so far this season, the senior has ten touchdowns and is averaging nearly 200 all-purpose yards per game.

"Just a great young man," said Beaman. "Gives us everything he's got. And just a great example of what Parrott Academy is all about."

McLawhorn said he wants to play in college, but first intends to embark on a two-year mission trip with his church after graduating from high school in the spring.

The Patriots are off this week, but return to the gridiron on Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m. against the GRACE Christian Eagles.
