GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – D.H. Conley and Post 39 baseball standout Shea Ward is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound graduating senior is looking to make a name for himself this summer.
Often times in life crossroads create opportunity.
And for Shea Ward, that opportunity involves playing summer ball with American Legion Post 39, before joining the Pitt Community College Bulldogs in the fall.
"I felt like the D-1 route would not have been a good idea," said Ward. "Since I got hurt, no one could really see me. I felt like Pitt, playing out here was just fun. I felt like it was a really good fit for me."
Ward, who's graduating from D.H. Conley high school later this week, suffered a setback last summer -- an injury -- making him switch his sights on playing basketball at the next level to playing baseball.
"Yeah, he's definitely a competitor," said longtime teammate Robbie O'Neal. "He's got a little inner drive. He thought about going to play basketball at one point, so that goes to show you what kind of athlete he is."
A switch-hitting third baseman, Ward is working his tail off and believes the staff at PCC can help him reach his dream of competing at the D-1 level.
"I feel like Coach Eason, Coach Wood and Coach Allen they really know how to get me to where I want to be, and I want to play at the D-1 level, and I feel like I can do that," Ward added.
He dreams of taking the field for ECU or UNCW one day, and those around him know his journey is just getting started.
"Now that he's solely sold on baseball, the sky is the limit for him, man," added O'Neal. "As long as he keeps working, he's going to get where he wants to be."
