KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – Down East Wood Ducks catcher and Texas Rangers No. 21 prospect Sam Huff is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
Huff was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 7th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
Back on Sunday, July 7, Huff hit a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the 2019 MLB All-Star Futures Game.
"Me and my wife, we were sitting there watching, and I said, 'It's perfect. He's going to tie the game right here,'" Wood Ducks manager Corey Ragsdale said when asked where he was during the homer.
"[Jim] Thome and [Sean] Casey, they were just talking to me like, 'I have a feeling you're going to hit a nuke right here,'" Huff added.
The 6-foot-5 catcher was later named MVP of the game in Cleveland.
"The preparation all dictates how you're going to do," Huff explained.
"That's the thing with Sam," said Ragsdale. "He's a special kid, special talent."
Now the entire baseball world -- not just Eastern North Carolina -- is getting to see this special talent.
"He already has 25 home runs," added Ragsdale. "He can catch. He can throw. He can move behind the plate. He's a 6-5 monster that runs very well. There's nothing on the field that this kid can't do."
Huff is currently riding a 10-game hitting streak and has four home runs since that long ball in the Futures Game.
"I feel confident," said Huff. "I understand what I need to do to get the right pitch to put a good swing on and not just go up there swinging. Understanding myself as a hitter and a player."
But like any young baseball prospect, the 21-year-old catcher from Phoenix still has a long way to go.
"He's by no means a finished product, and he'll tell you that," said Ragsdale. "We're going to continue to work and stay after it each and every day."
"[Ragsdale] believes in my ability, and if no one sees me as that kind of player yet, then they don't and I just have to prove it to them and one day they'll see it," added Huff. "And if I don't, then they were right. But I'm going to prove them wrong. That's what I'm going to do."
