Player of the Week: Owen Lin
East Carolina Aquatics 10-year-old swimmer Owen Lin is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
About three weeks ago, three East Carolina Aquatics swimmers broke multiple team records and achieved personal best times, all while competing at the 14-and-under state championships in Cary.
Greenville's own Owen Lin was one of those three talented swimmers, earning nine total medals (seven gold and two silver)!
But Owen Lin isn't like most 10-year-olds.
"It doesn't really happen for many normal kids," Lin said.
'It' is finding early success in the swimming pool.
"Definitely one of the best boys we've had come through at that age," ECA head age group coach Doug Parker added.
Back in early July, Lin shattered eight team records and was awarded the High Point award at states.
"The meet actually went a lot better than I expected," Lin said.
Maybe that's because he medaled in those nine events.
"At that meet three weeks ago, he completely wiped out the record board, so it was a pretty special weekend, and every swim was a great swim," Parker added.
"There were like a lot of other very fast swimmers who really motivated me," Lin explained.
That motivation stems from swimming with his friends six or sometimes even seven days a week.
"It's really fun," added Lin. "You're in the water. It's not like you have to do the homework or anything."
So the rising sixth grader says swimming beats doing homework.... What a surprise! But what doesn't come as a surprise is Lin's success. He ranks first in the state and 15th in the country in his age group.
"He's a dedicated swimmer," said Parker. "He's put a lot of time in the pool. He goes above and beyond especially from what you'd expect from a 10-year-old."
Owen's been swimming since he could walk and now competes in four events: the breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, and butterfly.
One day he dreams of breaking those state records.
