Player of the Week: Mike Webb
Ayden-Grifton senior wide receiver and defensive back Mike Webb is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
Under the tutelage of long-time head coach Paul Cornwell, the Chargers are looking to reach the playoffs for a remarkable 19th consecutive season.
One of the leaders taking ownership of that effort is Mike Webb, a senior who "does it all" for the Chargers, according to Cornwell.
Mike Webb has just one message for his opponents this season.
"Just watch three. There you go. Just watch three."
No. 3 is looking to be a leader on this 2019 Chargers team.
"He works very hard," said Cornwell. "He leads by example and the guys that are seniors, this is how they're leaving their legacy."
Last season, Webb looked up to guys like Ray Darden. Darden is a former WITN Pepsi Player of the Week. But now it's Webb's turn.
"I've been looking up to the past couple players but now it's my turn to step up and help the younger guys," Webb said.
Paul Cornwell -- who's in his 15th season in charge of the Chargers -- raves about his talented two-way, three-year varsity starter.
"We've got a lot of great kids, and I've been doing it for 30 years, and he's as good as any of them," exclaimed Cornwell. "High character young man and just a joy to be around."
Now Webb is beginning his third season on varsity. He prides himself on his speed and physicality. He can run a 4.4 40-yard dash. But more importantly, football means family.
"Football is a family sport," added Webb. "I like working together and coming together in the end."
Cornwell says Webb is capable of playing at the college level.
"Academically he's very solid and he's a great kid and he's a really good football player, so I think he'll definitely get an opportunity," Cornwell explained.
And Webb wants that opportunity. But for right now, No. 3 has his mind set on his senior season.
"Bringing back a conference championship to Ayden-Grifton," said Webb on his goal for this season. "Make Ayden-Grifton a football school again and just hopefully I made an impact on the school."
Webb and the Chargers open their 2019 season at home against the Southside Seahawks on Friday, August 23 at 7 p.m.
