JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Jacksonville football's standout senior quarterback Justyn Benton is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
"He's just an all-around great kid," said Jacksonville head coach Beau Williams. "Great character. Very intelligent kid. Somebody you look forward to having in the program."
Benton's leadership and play on the field were both critical in the Cardinals' 56-21 win over Eastern Wayne in the opening round of the state playoffs Friday night. Benton tallied four touchdowns in the victory.
"My parents always told me if I'm going to do something, to put my all into it," Benton said at practice Monday.

Benton puts school first and would very much like to play football at the collegiate level. When asked how he wants to be remembered by the Jacksonville community after the football season, here's how he responded:
"One of my biggest things is just being known as a person who never gave up on his teammates and played as a team. I would not be here if it wasn't for the 21 other dudes that play every Friday night with me. Especially the whole team, and the coaching staff, and the school support, I wouldn't be the player I am today."
Benton and the Cardinals (8-1, 4-1) hit the road to face Western Alamance (11-1, 7-0) in the second round of the 2018 3A Football Championships Friday night. Kickoff against the Warriors is slated for 7:30 p.m. This is a rematch of last year's third round game, where the Warriors advanced with a 38-7 win.
