CHOCOWINITY, N.C (WITN) - Southside senior track standout Jacqueline Wood is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
In a small town off Highway 33 sits Southside High School, home to nearly 500 students, but none more distinct than Jacqueline Wood.
"Everything she does is full speed," said Southside track and field head coach Andre Quinerly. "She just works hard. She's a role model. Everyone wants to be like 'Jac.'"
Wood is known as "The Horse" to many of her teammates, likely because of her blazing speed paired with her passion for actual horses.
"I work really hard for what I need to do on the track," said Wood, a senior at Southside High School. "Everything is awesome out here on the track team. Everybody is like a family, so it's really easy to work out here. You just want to show out and do what you need to do."
Last year, as a junior, Wood helped the Seahawks to a state championship in the 4x200-meter relay.
"It was all excitement," Wood explained on the experience.
"It was wonderful," added Quinerly. "To see all her hard work pay off, and now she's a state champion and that's something she can keep with her forever."
She also holds school records in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
"You always want to have confidence when you run, and experience and don't let others get to your mind," Wood said in regards to her running strategy.
That confidence led Wood to several top finishes at states last year. In fact, she placed second in the 200, third in the 4x400 and fifth in the 100.
She even got to represent her country in Australia this past summer at the 18th annual Down Under International Games.
"I had confidence, and I went there with confidence, and I knew what I had to do for USA and for my state of North Carolina," Wood said on the global affair.
But now her focus is back here in the East, as she attempts to make one final state championship run.
"I'm a senior, and I really hate to leave, but the time has come, but at least I made my moments out here on the track with a good team," Wood said.
