Player of the Week: Darryl McCaster Jr.

WARSAW, N.C. (WITN) - James Kenan boys basketball senior guard Darryl McCaster Jr. is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!

"[Darryl] is one of those kids that comes around every 10 or 15 years," said James Kenan head coach Reggie Melvin. "He's a special breed."

McCaster Jr. is James Kenan High School's all-time leading scorer and is just the third player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

"Every day that I don't have practice, I'm in the gym for at least six to eight hours," said McCaster Jr. "I just put in hard work."

McCaster Jr. also goes by SkyBuckets and is averaging 28 points, four assists, five rebounds, and five steals per game this season.

"I was his middle school coach, and I watched him grow, mature as a basketball player, and as a young man," added Melvin. "And he's just blossomed. And his senior year, it's amazing the things he's doing every night."

"My team, they help me out a lot," explained McCaster Jr. "But the best part of my game is my handle, and how I stay energetic and I stay moving. And I get a lot of steals, and I just play with energy and effort."

But somehow that energy and effort has yet to translate into any college offers, so Melvin has one simple message for any coach willing to listen.

"They gonna miss out if they don't give him an opportunity," said Melvin with a smile. "He can be one of those special players who can change a program."
