GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina Head Football Coach Scottie Montgomery opened the second week of spring workouts with an emphasis on conditioning late Monday afternoon on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.

The Pirates followed 60 minutes of traditional work, which consisted of individual and team-on-team sessions, with 40 minutes of conditioning-themed drills and sprints that were conducted on the warmest and most humid afternoon of the spring period to date. The practice was ECU's fourth overall and second wearing pads.

"I would call it a good hard day's work," Montgomery said. "For a player, today isn't something one looks forward to with a great deal of excitement, but as a coach, it's necessary on many fronts. Let's just say we learned a lot about our willingness to finish."

Like Friday's initial full-pad outing, the Pirates continued to stress execution and fundamentals during their on-field instruction. Three eight-minute team periods primarily keyed on first and third down efficiency on both sides of the ball and offered looks in both base and blitz packages.

ECU returns to action Wednesday and will follow with a workout Friday before conducting its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday afternoon on Bagwell Field inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Nate Harvey, a 6-foot-1, 223-pound junior running back, was formally added to the spring roster Monday ... Harvey transferred into the ECU program from Georgia Military College after a prep career at Knightdale (N.C.) High School ... Montgomery continued to address the depth and talent of the running back position, saying "it is in much better shape than it was a year ago" ... He mentioned that Hussein Howe, Devin Anderson, Derrell Scott and Anthony Scott have collectively provided the Pirates with a much-needed boost in the backfield and have been productive in the first four days of practice ... Freshman Leroy Henley provided a highlight from the receiver slot with a 48-yard touchdown catch during the team period ... SS Tim Irvin (knee) and WR Terrell Green (shoulder) sat out Monday's workout because of injuries ... Ten early enrollees who are participating in spring drills were assigned their uniform numbers - DE Taijh Alston (57), WR Jayden Borders (82), ILB Cannon Gibbs (33), WR Leroy Henley (84), DB Marcus Holton, Jr. (22), QB Kingsley Ifedi (2), OL Matt Morgan (73), ILB Ben Norris (49), OL Dqmarcus Shaw (52) and TE Eric Weber (43).
