Kinston, N.C. (DEWDS) – On the opening day of Copa de la Diversion, the Patos Joyujos defeated the Mudcats 7-1 on Sunday at historic Grainger Stadium, to split the opening series of the season with Carolina.

Down East scored four runs in the fourth inning and added three in the eighth to pick up their second win of the year.

Carolina (2-2) starter Dylan File (loss, 0-1) was dominant early, retiring the first nine batters he faced, including six via the strikeout. However, the Patos Joyuyos got to him the second time through the order. Eric Jenkins doubled to left to lead off the fourth inning, and two batters later Leody Taveras reached on an infield single, extending his hitting streak to four in a row. Diosbel Arias followed with a double down the left field line to plate two runs, and get Down East on the board first. Two batters later, Ryan Dorow took File deep to left for the team’s first home run of the season, doubling the lead at 4-0.

Reid Anderson got the start for Down East (2-2) and worked 4.1 hitless innings, giving up four walks, and striking out six, without allowing a run. He exited after striking out Rob Henry to begin the fifth, with his pitch count at 73 pitches. Kaleb Fontenot (win, 1-0) took over and worked 1.2 in relief, allowing a hit and recording a strikeout to earn his first win, as the bullpen has claimed each of the victories so far this season. The hit he allowed was to Payton Henry with two outs in the sixth, ending the Patos Joyuyos no-hit bid.

Down East added to their lead in the eighth inning when Yonny Hernandez and Jenkins worked consecutive walks to force reliever Chris Dula from the game. J.T. Hintzen came in and then walked Bubba Thompson to load the bases, and two batters later, Arias drew a free pass to force in a run. Tyreque Reed then doubled down the left field line to score a pair, and push the lead to 7-0.

The Mudcats did break up the shutout in the ninth on a solo home run from Henry, his first of the season.

The Wood Ducks continue their 11-game home stand tomorrow, when the Myrtle Beach Pelicans come to town for a three game series. Righty Erling Moreno (0-0, -.--) will get the start for the Pelicans, while Down East has yet to name a starter.
