Chris Miller of the Jacksonville Daily News first reported that Monarchs head coach Kendrick Pollock was under investigation by Onslow County Public Schools. Pollock, who led Northside to the 2AA state finals in his first year as head coach last season, was being investigated for allegedly leaving a Monarchs football player in Wilmington after an altercation with that player following Friday night's loss to New Hanover.
Suzie Ulbrich with Onslow County Schools released this statement:
The safety and security of students is of the utmost importance to the Onslow County School System. On Friday, August 25, 2017, at the end of the Northside/New Hanover varsity football game, a senior student-athlete was not transported back to Jacksonville with the team. The situation has been investigated and it was discovered that appropriate protocols were not followed. Our sincere apologies go out to the student and family for this regrettable event.
This matter was brought to the attention of the school administration and district staff, and has been handled as a personnel matter by the district Human Resources department. Onslow County Schools will critically review policies and procedures, as well as training for employees to ensure this will not happen in the future.
