No. 14 ECU Baseball blanks Marist in series opener, 5-0

GREENVILLE, N.C. (ECU) – Jake Agnos tossed seven scoreless innings striking out 10 batters, while No. 14 ECU collected 13 hits on its way to a 5-0 series opening win over Marist Friday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win, the Pirates improve to 10-5 on the season while the Red Fox drop to 4-6.

ECU broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning on Brady Lloyd’s sac fly putting the Pirates up 1-0. Jake Washer reached on an error and took third on a well-executed hit and run by Turner Brown before darting home on Lloyd’s fly ball to right field.

Agnos (2-1) earned his second win of the season and for the third-straight outing he struck out at least nine batters. The left fanned at least one batter in all seven frames and had multiple punchouts in the first, second and fifth innings, while six of his punchouts were looking. Zach Barnes gave up two hits and struck out one in an inning of relief work and Cam Colmore fanned one in the ninth to preserve the shutout.

Skylar Pichardo (0-3) suffered the loss surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four-plus innings. Ryan Cardona gave up one run (earned) on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts in four innings out of the bullpen.

The Pirates extended their lead to 4-0 pushing across three runs in the home half of the fifth. Lane Hoover (single), Spencer Brickhouse (single) and Alec Burleson (double) registered consecutive hits with the latter plating Hoover. Thomas Francisco’s RBI ground out scored Brickhouse from third and Washer’s base knock to right field easily scored Burleson, who was on third.

Brickhouse’s second hit of the afternoon drove in Bryant Packard making it a 5-0 ball game in the sixth. Packard leadoff with a single to right and moved to second on Hoover’s second base hit of the day a shot to right field. Brickhouse stroked a single to left field plating Packard.

Four Pirates tallied multiple hits in the contest with Lloyd going 3-for-3 with a sac fly, while Brickhouse, Hover and Washer each had two hits. Anthony Lazar posted a three-hit afternoon for Marist and Matt Rubayo added two.

The Pirates and Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday, March 9 with a 4 p.m. (ET) scheduled first pitch.
