No. 12 ECU takes down Tulane 6-1 to complete weekend sweep

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Tyler Smith allowed one run over five innings of work and Spencer Brickhouse hit a two-run homer in the first frame lifting No. 12 ECU to a 6-1 win over Tulane Sunday afternoon at Greer Field inside Turchin Stadium.

With the win the Pirates complete the series sweep and improve to 33-12 overall and 11-7 in American Athletic Conference action while the Green Wave falls to 22-27 on the season and 7-11 in AAC play.

How It Happened:

Brickhouse staked ECU to an early 2-0 lead belting his seventh home run of the season in the first inning. With one out, Dwanya Williams-Sutton reached on an error, stole second and came around on Brickhouse’s moon-shot down the right field line. Tulane responded with a run in the home half of the first cutting the lead to one, 2-1. Jonathon Artigues doubled to start the game, took third on a passed ball and came home on Trevor Jensen’s infield RBI single. The Pirates opened the game up with a three-run third pushing their lead to 5-1. Connor Litton scored the frames first run on Andrew Henrickson’s infield single coupled with a Kody Hoese throwing error. With Henrickson standing on third and the Wave infield in, Lloyd slapped a single to right center plating Henrickson. Lloyd would score the last run of the stanza on Seth Caddell’s sac fly to left-center giving ECU a four-run lead, 5-1. Packard’s third hit of the game (single) drove in Caddell from second capping the scoring at 6-1.

Pirate Pitchers:

Smith (7-1) gave up one run (earned) on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Jake Agnos worked three scoreless frames of relief surrendering one hits and strikeout four, while Trey Benton worked a scoreless ninth fanning a pair of batters.

Green Wave Staff:

Josh Bates (2-2) took the loss giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts in three innings. Trent Johnson allowed one run (earned) on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings, while Sam Bjorngeld retired all four Pirates he faced with one strikeout.

ECU Bats:

The Pirates pounded out 11 hits on the night improving to 20-2 when they reach the double-digit hit mark. Packard led the way going 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Caddell collected a pair of hits on the day. Brickhouse drove in two of ECU’s five runs and five different Pirates crossed home in the contest.

The sweep is the second road sweep of the year for ECU (other: Memphis) … ECU also handed Tulane its first ever sweep since joining The American in 2014 …
