GREENVILLE, N.C. – The trio of Brady Lloyd, Bryant Packard and Dwanya Williams-Sutton each hit home runs, while Jake Kuchmaner notched his second win of the season helping No. 10 ECU to a 9-1 win over Norfolk State Tuesday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win the Pirates improve to 34-12 overall and the Spartans fall to 17-26.

How It Happened:

Packard put the Pirates up early in the first inning belting his fourth leadoff home run of the year (11th long ball of the season) in the first inning staking ECU to a 1-0 lead. Turner Brown’s sac bunt in the second pushed across another run scoring Lloyd to stretch the lead to two, 2-0. In the third, Williams-Sutton blasted fourth home run, a solo blast to left field, and three batters later Lloyd hit a two-run shot to left capping a three-run frame making it a 5-0 game. From there, ECU would score a run in the fourth (Williams-Sutton double) and three in the eighth (Bryson Worrell 2 RBI double and Alec Burleson single) for a 9-0 advantage before the Spartans plated a run in the ninth.

Godwin’s Comments:

“The velocity their starter was throwing wasn’t something we are used to seeing, but I thought it was good for Packard, Dwanya and Brady to get us going early with home runs. I thought our guys that came off the bench played well with Bryson getting a two-run, two-out double and Burleson following with an RBI single. I also liked the way we pitched tonight and we were able to get some guys work that really haven’t pitched a lot this year.”

Pirate Pitchers:

Kuchmaner (2-0) got the win on a pre-determined outing tossing four shutout frames where he allowed five hits, walked one and struck out three. ECU would use four arms out of the bullpen getting outings from Gavin Williams (1.1 IP, 1 BB), West Covington (1.2 IP, 1 K), Willy Strong (1.1 IP, 1 R, 1K) and Cole Beavin (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB).

Spartans Staff:

Tyler Morgan (0-3) suffered the loss giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit with two walks before turning the game over to his bullpen. Norfolk State got outings from Trey Hanchey (3.0 IP, 5 H, 4 Rs, 4 Ks), Joey Santos (1.0 IP, 2 BBs, 1 K), Jalen Rudolph (1.1 IP), Nick McGuire (0.1 IP, 1 R) and Seth Hockett (0.1 IP, 3 Hs, 2 Rs, 2 BBs).

ECU Bats:

The Pirates registered nine hits on the night getting a pair each from Seth Caddell and Williams-Sutton. Five others collected a hit including Packard, who extended his hit streak to 24 games. Lloyd, Williams-Sutton and Worrell each drove in a pair of runs, while Nick Barber and Lloyd both crossed home twice. Packard also reached base three times on the night (home run, two walks).
