Gaffney Garners First American Conference Player-of-the-Week Honor

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina graduate student Kristen Gaffney has been named the first American Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for the 2016-17 season according to an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.

Gaffney is the first Pirate to receive the conference's top weekly honor since Jada Payne on Dec. 15, 2014.

The Cary, N.C., native averaged 27.5 points, seven rebounds and 4.5 steals while shooting 24-for-35 (.686) from the field in a 2-0 week for the Pirates. She scored 23 points on 9-for-12 shooting and had a personal-best seven steals in 23 minutes of court time in a 107-40 win over Greensboro College on Friday, Nov. 11. Gaffney topped that performance with a career-high 32 points on 15-for-23 shooting with eight boards and scored six of ECU's 13 points while making all three shot attempts in overtime as part of an 83-81 home victory over Detroit-Mercy on Sunday, Nov. 13.

East Carolina returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 16 to host UNCW for Education Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., at Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum.
