Four area high school football teams ready for State Championship Saturday

Raleigh, N.C. (WITN) - Just 16 high school football teams remain in the 2018 NCHSAA Football Playoff Championships, and four of those teams hail from the WITN viewing area.

The annual media meet and greet was held at N.C. State's Carter-Finley Stadium on Wednesday.

Jacksonville, Northeastern, Tarboro, and Pamlico County will all compete for a state title this upcoming Saturday.

In 3A, Beau Williams' Jacksonville Cardinals missed the entire month of September because of Hurricane Florence, but his team persevered to reach the state title game for the first time since 1994.

"I mean it's been great for us," said Williams. "After the year we've had so far. It was a rough start. But right now the community is fired up and excited for us to make it back. And it's just really big for our people."

In 2A, Antonio Moore's undefeated Northeastern Eagles will look to win a state crown for the first time in school history.

"Our city needs something like this," said Moore. "Small, rural area. Kids' been working pretty hard all year, and it'd be big for us."

And how about the fact that two teams from the same conference will be playing for it all on Saturday?

Jeff Craddock's Tarboro Vikings will be going for back-to-back titles.

"It's been a great conference to be a part of," said Craddock. "I really think it's one of the best 1A conferences in the state. At one time we had three teams in the top ten and two of them have come out now playing for state titles. So it's just a privilege and honor to represent our conference."

While Torrey Nowell's Pamlico County Hurricanes are looking to claim their very first state championship.

"I just think it's incredible for the Coastal Plains to have two teams representing us in the state championship," Nowell said.
