PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second time this season, Jayda Hylton-Pelaia of the ECU women’s soccer team has been chosen as the AAC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
“Jayda is such a threat when she gets forward,” said head coach Jason Hamilton. “She was involved in three of our five goals on the weekend. On the other end of it, she is a fantastic 1v1 defender. She is scrappy and times her tackles well. You can’t ask for much more out of someone in the back line.”
Hylton-Pelaia played a key role in the Pirate defense as ECU shutout both of its opponents last weekend. The junior from Brampton, Ontario played 155 minutes in the two games, including the full 90 in the 3-0 win over Charlotte.
Along with her duties on the defensive end, Hylton-Pelaia had a career-best weekend offensively. Her first collegiate goal opened the scoring in ECU’s 2-0 win over Campbell on Thursday night. Hylton-Pelaia scored by beating a pair of Campbell defenders then scoring on a long-range shot. She added another point by getting in behind the Charlotte defense and crossing to Courtney Cash for an easy tap-in.
It is the second time Hylton-Pelaia has been honored by the AAC this season. She was also chosen as the Defensive Player of the Week on August 20th. It is the third such honor for ECU this year, with Kim Sanford also being named Defensive Player of the Week on August 27th.
ECU will return to action on Thursday, September 20 with the first game of the AAC schedule. The Pirates will travel to Tulsa with the match kicking off at 8:00 p.m.
