GREENVILLE, N.C. (ECU) – ECU rookie forward Jayden Gardner has been named Co-Freshman-of-the-Week by the American Athletic Conference. It is the third time he has been honored by the league this season. He shares the award this week with USF’s Alexis Yetna.
The Wake Forest native was also honored on Nov. 12 and Dec. 3.
Last week, the 6-foot-6 forward averaged 26.5 points, 14.0 rebounds, shot 54.3 percent from the field and 70.0 percent at the free throw in a pair of road games against Memphis and UCF.
Against the Knights, Gardner posted conference freshman records for points (35) and rebounds (20), while producing the league’s first-ever double-double with at 30 points and 20 rebounds. He became the 11th player in conference history to score 35 points in a game and just the third to grab 20 boards. He finished the game 12-of-21 from the field and 10-of-16 at the free throw line in 38 minutes.
Earlier in the week against Memphis, Gardner dropped in 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds at the FedExForum. After being held to six points and one rebound in the first half, Gardner broke out for 12 points and seven rebounds in the final 20 minutes. He was 7-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free throw line, playing 26 minutes.
Gardner leads The American in scoring at 19.4 points per game and is second in rebounding at 9.5 rebounds per game. He leads the conference in free throws made (111) and attempted (147) and is shooting 75.5 percent at the charity stripe, while hitting on 55.6 percent of his field goal attempts.
Gardner will lead the Pirates back onto the court Wednesday, Jan. 16, against Temple inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
