GREENVILLE, N.C. (ECU) – ECU completed its journey through the elimination bracket Monday night, rolling past No. 3 seed Campbell 12-3 to win the NCAA Greenville Regional before a sellout crowd of 5,206 inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Pirates will travel to face No. 7 national seed Louisville in the super regional round next weekend.
ECU (47-16) won four-straight games in two days, including two over the Camels (37-21) Monday, after dropping the tournament opener. The Pirates also secured the fifth NCAA regional championship in program history as well as the third as an on campus host (2009, 2016).
Turner Brown was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Spencer Brickhouse was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Spencer Packard led Campbell with three hits while driving in all three of the Camels’ runs.
Jake Kuchmaner (7-2) picked up the win in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing just a single hit. Campbell starter Phil Simpson (2-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
After ECU starter Gavin Williams retired the Camels in order to begin the contest, Bryant Packard singled to left field on the first pitch of his at bat. A Campbell throwing error allowed Brown to reach first and advance to second while Packard moved to third. Alec Burleson then drove in Packard with a RBI groundout and a Brickhouse RBI double plated Brown to leave the Pirates with a 2-0 lead through one complete.
ECU added to the advantage in the bottom of the second. Thomas Francisco led off with a single before Bryson Worrell walked and Packard singled through the left side to load the bases with one out. After a pitching change, Brown put a ball in play that was eventually botched by the defense and allowed two runs to cross home. A solo home run by Brickhouse in the bottom of the third extended the Pirate edge to 5-0.
The Camels broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth after Luis Gimenez singled and reached second on a wild pitch, later scoring on a Packard RBI single. New ECU pitcher Ryder Giles allowed a single to Koby Collins but bounced back with two-straight outs to limit the damage to just one.
A Brown two-out RBI double off the right field wall re-established the Pirates’ five-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Packard came through for the visitors in the top of the fifth, scoring Gimenez and AJ Hrica to slice the deficit to 6-3.
With the contest still in flux, Kuchman entered to pitch in the top of the sixth and allowed just one base runner through the eighth inning. In the meantime, Brady Lloyd drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh and ECU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the result beyond doubt. Brickhouse notched his third and fourth RBI of the game in the eighth frame via a two-run double down the left field line.
Kuchmaner and Evan Voliva combined to throw the top of the ninth, retiring Campbell in order to seal the regional title.
