GREENVILLE, N.C. – Pittsburgh scored the first five runs of the game Thursday afternoon on the way to a 5-2 non-conference softball victory over East Carolina at the ECU Softball Stadium.
Team Records: East Carolina: (13-9) | Pittsburgh: (14-5)
The Pirates and Panthers were originally scheduled to take part in the JMU Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va., this weekend, but due to impending inclement weather in Virginia, all three teams decided to move the event to Greenville.
Redshirt freshman infielder Tate McClellan tallied a hit, a run scored and a RBI to pace the ECU offense while junior infielder Meredith Burroughs scored a run and redshirt junior catcher Alex Mycek drew a pair of walks. McKayla Taylor led the way for Pitt, notching two hits, a run scored and two RBI.
Sophomore RHP Mary Williams (3-4) went the distance in the circle for East Carolina, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Brittany Knight (8-2) also tossed a complete game in picking up her eighth win of the season, scattering five hits and surrendering two runs. She walked four batters and struck out a pair.
The Decisive Innings
In the top of the third, with the Panthers holding a 1-0 advantage, Gabrielle Fredericks drew a leadoff walk. With one out, Taylor got a hold of a 1-0 pitch and sent it over the wall in left field to afford Pitt some breathing room at 3-0. The teams traded a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but did not score the rest of the contest.
Statistic of the Game
The Panthers’ leadoff batters reached base in five of seven innings while ECU was 1-for-7 comparatively.
East Carolina will play a doubleheader Friday afternoon, taking on No. 13 JMU at 1:30 before matching up against Pitt again at 4. The Dukes and Panthers will begin the day facing off at 11 a.m.
