ECU Softball falls to Winthrop in Purple-Gold Invitational finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. (ECU) – Winthrop used a quick start Sunday afternoon to down ECU 19-0 in five innings in the finale of the Purple-Gold Invitational inside the ECU Softball Stadium.

Taylor Charlton was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, four RBI and two walks for the Eagles while Morgan Lowers went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Ashleigh Inae paced the Pirates with two hits. Tyler King also extended her hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the third inning.

Madyson Watson (3-2) threw four scoreless innings, scattered three hits and struck out five to secure the win. Whitney Sanford (3-2) surrendered 13 runs (12 earned) on nine hits with seven walks in 3.2 innings of work.

Winthrop plated 12 runs in the first inning on seven hits and four walks. Ansley Gilwreath hit a grand slam while Charlton added a two-run shot and Keleigh Romine notched a two-run single to account for eight of the scores.

The Eagles added six runs on five hits in the top of the third off of ECU reliever Liv Garman before Sanford re-entered to finish out the contest.

The Pirates close out their homestand Wednesday afternoon, hosting a doubleheader against Big South Conference foe Campbell. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
