ECU Softball drops both ends of doubleheader at UNCW
WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW extended its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep of East Carolina in non-conference softball action Wednesday evening at Boseman Field. The Seahawks captured the twinbill by scores of 7-2 and 6-3.
Team Records: East Carolina: (17-18) | UNCW: (23-6-1)
The Rundown: Game One
A quartet of ECU batters tallied a hit apiece while senior outfielders Ciara Ervin and Kacie Oshiro each scored a run. Junior infielder Meredith Burroughs and senior outfielder Ali Ramirez accounted for both of the Pirates’ RBI. Kali Jones went 3-for-4 to pace the Seahawks while Lauren Moore and Merritt Wilkinson scored a pair of runs each. Hannah Adamczyk also accounted for two RBI.
Burroughs (2-2) was tagged with the loss in the circle, tossing just 0.1 innings and surrendering a run with two walks. Haley Lenderman (3-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing four effective innings during which she allowed just one hit, walked two batters and struck out three.
How They Scored
Nella Chamblee put the Seahawks on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a RBI single to left field. UNCW pushed further ahead in the bottom of the second thanks to a Wilkinson RBI double down the left field line to make it 2-0. ECU responded in the top of the third, plating a pair of runs to knot the score at two. Burroughs yanked an opposite field single to score Ervin before a Ramirez sacrifice fly drove home Oshiro.
The game remained tied for the next couple of innings before the Seahawks netted the winning tally in the home half of the fifth inning. Adamczyk originally grounded out to short to open the half inning but received new life thanks to an illegal pitch call. That proved to be huge as she ended up walking and scoring on a two-out RBI single by Kali Jones to put the home side ahead for good at 3-2. UNCW finished the job in the bottom of the sixth, plating four runs on five hits to provide the final margin.
Statistics of the Game
The Seahawks drove in four of their runs with two outs on the board while also going 7-for-13 with two away. The Pirates, conversely, were just 2-for-13 with runners on base.
The Rundown: Game Two

Wilkinson tallied two hits and tied her career high with four RBI to aid her team’s cause.

How They Scored
As in the first game of the doubleheader, UNCW plated a pair of early runs to take a quick 2-0 edge. Rachel Willis notched a RBI single in the bottom of the first before Wilkinson launched one-out home run over the left field fence in the home half of the third. Adamczyk added a RBI groundout in the fifth to make the score 3-0 before Wilkinson laced a double to deep center field with the bases loaded to score all three runners and push the Seahawk cushion to 6-0.
East Carolina put together a big rally in its final at bat. Redshirt freshman infielder Tate McClellan roped a single up the middle to lead off the half inning before freshman utility Logan Wood pounded a double to the gap in right center to put McClellan at third. Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to put ECU on the board and Quick reached on a fielder’s choice play to load the bases with one out. Ervin singled to left center to load the bases once more before Oshiro kept the line moving with a RBI single to first base.
Burroughs made it 6-3 via another fielder’s choice and Ramirez worked a walk to keep the Pirate hopes alive. Davis finally ended the contest by coaxing a ground ball off of the bat of redshirt junior catcher Alex Mycek that resulted in a force out at third base.
Statistics of the Game
The Seahawks were effective once again with two outs on the board as they were 5-for-10 and recorded four two-out RBI. ECU was 3-for-14 with runners on base.
