$3,500 reward now being offered in bat attack of elderly Kinston woman

KINSTON, N.C (WITN) - The reward has been increased for information in the case of a 72-year-old woman who was beaten with a bat last month.

Police say Nell Pittman was hit in the head three times with a bat during an attempted carjacking. At last check, the woman was in a coma.

It happened January 2nd in the parking lot of Jessie Bell's Soul Food on E. Vernon Avenue.

The reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.

Recently, police released an artist rendering of a man believed to be involved in the attack.

Kinston police have released a sketch of a person of interest in an attempted carjacking.

Officers posted a photo on their Facebook page of the man believed to be involved in the beating of a 72-year-old woman near Jessie Bell's Soul Food on E. Vernon Avenue back on January 2.

Police say Nell Pittman was hit in the head three times with a bat. At last check, Pittman was in a coma.

The person of interest is described as a black man, between the ages of 20-30 years old, 5'10-6' tall and about 200 pounds.

Family members say that a woman attacked outside of a restaurant during an attempted carjacking is in critical condition at the hospital.

We spoke with family members of Nell Pittman. They say that the 72-year-old had just picked up food at Jessie Bell's Soul Food in Kinston when a man attacked her with a black and silver bat.

They say that Pittman was hit in the head three times with the bat but still managed to fight back.

Police say the woman then went inside and asked employees to call police.

The man ran from the scene onto McLewean Street.

Pittman was taken to Vidant Medical Center where the family tells us she is in critical condition.

Police are asking for help figuring out who is responsible for attacking a woman during an attempted carjacking.

Kinston Police say officers were called to Jessie Bell's Soul Food restaurant at 106 E. Vernon Avenue around 6:25 p.m. Thursday.

Officers say a 72-year-old woman was attacked in the parking lot by someone who then tried to steal the victim's Toyota RAV4.

Police say the victim was able to fight back and then went into the restaurant for help.

The attacker is said to have taken off from the scene on foot onto McLewean Street.

The victim was taken to Vidant Medical Center.
