Troopers identify woman killed in head-on crash on Pungo River bridge

BELHAVEN, NC (WITN) - The Highway Patrol has identified a woman killed in a head-on collision Tuesday here in the east.

Troopers say that Debra Harris, 56, of Washington, was killed when her car crossed the centerline on the Pungo River bridge heading into Belhaven and crashed into an oncoming pickup truck.

Officials say the driver of the pickup, Joseph Williams II, 27, of Scranton, is not being charged in the case.

A woman is dead after a head-on collision in one Eastern Carolina county this morning.

The crash happened around 6:00 a.m. on the Pungo River bridge going into Belhaven.

Trooper Mike Barton says the victim was heading into Belhaven on Highway 99 when her car crossed the centerline and hit an oncoming pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup truck was also injured, but nothing life-threatening.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating why the woman's vehicle crossed the centerline. Her name has not yet been released.

The bridge was closed for more than an hour due to the crash.
