Woman in critical condition after Duplin County crash

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WITN) A driver here in the east is in critical condition after another driver fell asleep behind the wheel and drifted into oncoming traffic.

Early Wednesday morning in Duplin County, two people in a pickup truck were traveling south on NC Highway 111 near Panther Creek Road when authorities say the driver fell asleep and entered the north-bound lane hitting another car.

The driver and passenger in the pickup truck were taken to Vidant Medical Center in Kenansville with non life threatening injuries and are currently in stable condition.

The 39-year-old woman driving the other car had to be cut out of her vehicle and treated on scene for injuries to her lower extremities. She was then air lifted in critical condition to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

The driver in the pickup received three citations from Highway Patrol, including reckless driving, crossing center line and not wearing a seatbelt.
