Winter weather/flu season blamed for blood bank shortages in ENC

EASTERN CAROLINA (WITN) - The Northeastern Chapter/ENC Region of the American Red Cross is looking for blood donors and blood drive volunteers to help make up for blood bank shortages across the east.

Winter weather in early 2018 forced the cancellation of hundreds of blood drives across the region, which quickly added up to big losses for local blood banks that support patients in need.

Organizers say that winter weather kept people out of work and school, forcing many to also cancel blood donation appointments. Combine that with a strong flu season, and the need is high while supply is low.

The Red Cross also needs volunteers to work as “greeters” at drives to welcome donors as they arrive and to provide refreshments after donors have given blood. These volunteers are particularly needed in Beaufort and Pitt counties.

Blood drives are planned monthly throughout the community at various
businesses, churches, mobile drives and blood centers.
