Washington named "Small Town of the Year" by NC Rural Center

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN)- A city here in Eastern Carolina has been honored for its citizen engagement efforts and other civic efforts.

The NC Rural Center named Washington in Beaufort County the 2019 Small Town of the Year at this years NC Rural Assembly.

The assembly was held in Raleigh on November 21st and continued Friday.

Officials tell us the award recognizes a town that embraces citizen engagement, values diversity, and fosters strong partnerships.

"In the past few years, Washington has become a great tourist destination and a welcoming community for those who call it home," said Senior Director of Progams Misty Herget, "In the face of natural disasters, Washington has become more resilient and strategic in its planning for the future."

We're told to be considered, the town must promote innovative economic development initiatives and programs as well as an entrepreneur-friendly environment.
