WITN's Teacher of the Week for September 18 is Sandie Kirkman from Pocosin Innovative Charter School in Washington County.

Kirkman is an ECU graduate with a BS in Elementary Education. During her undergraduate studies, she was part of the prestigious Teaching Fellows Scholarship.

After graduating, she taught first grade in Lenoir County for two years before making her way to the agriculture based charter school in Creswell. She now teaches kindergarten and lives in Columbia with her husband.

Kirkman says she has wanted to be a teacher ever since she was in second grade. She says she has a passion for not only teaching students, but being there for them. She believes in establishing relationships with her kids and says she prioritizes those relationships over content and curriculum.

She often goes out of her way to attend her students sports games and other events to cheer them on.

The person who nominated her wrote: “I nominated Mrs. Kirkman of Pocosin Innovative Charter School in Creswell, NC because she is a wonderful kindergarten teacher. She has already taught my son so much in just a couple of weeks.”

Congratulations, Mrs. Kirkman!

Every week during the school year WITN will recognize a Teacher of the Week on WITN News at Sunrise. The winner receives a plaque and $100 gift card for school supplies.
