WITN’s Teacher of the Week: Kayla Shelton from Beaufort Early College High School
WITN's Teacher of the Week for October 23 is Kayla Shelton from Beaufort Early College High School.
Shelton is an ECU graduate with a BS in Social Studies Education. She utilized her degree to begin teaching eight years ago at Bear Grass Charter School.
After four years at the charter school, she moved to Beaufort Early College High School where she currently teaches ninth grade World History and Civics and Economics. She is also the faculty advisor for the Service Club and Student Government Associations.
She says her goal as a teacher is to “help students become active, informed citizens and be able to find their voice in the world as well as understand the importance of giving back to their community.”
The person who nominated Shelton wrote: “Mrs. Shelton is an amazing teacher at the Beaufort County Early College. She teaches both World History and Civics and Economics at school and always manages to make it fun. From learning about ancient civilizations all the way to modern day America, Mrs. Shelton always smiles and has fun. Mrs. Shelton also helps outside of her class. She helps run the Student Government Association and the Service Club. One of my favorite activities was the mock Congress, where all freshman students were given a committee and created bills to be approved by the president, our principal. Overall, she was a great teacher who always enjoys her work.”
Congratulations, Mrs. Shelton!
Every week during the school year WITN will recognize a Teacher of the Week on WITN News at Sunrise. The winner receives a plaque and $100 gift card for school supplies.
