WITN's Teacher of the Week: Jennifer Willoughby from Riverside Middle School
WITN's Teacher of the Week for November 20 is Jennifer Willoughby from Riverside Middle School.
The Elm City native teaches sixth grade math at the school in Williamston. She says she got her passion for teaching from her mother, who was also a teacher.
She says her philosophy for teaching is simple, that “all students can and will learn, just at a different pace and in a different way. I believe that when everyone does their part, each child will be successful.”
She has been practicing this philosophy throughout her 17-year teaching career and says it is a privilege to be able to mold the minds of our future leaders.
When she is not teaching, Willoughby loves spending time with her husband, two daughters and son. You can usually find her on the baseball field or soccer field cheering for her children, as well as her students. She is also involved in theater with Martin Community Players.
The person who nominated Willoughby wrote: “My 11 year old son suffers from anxiety. He is a 6th grade student at Riverside Middle school in Williamston. His worst subject is math because of his lack of self confidence & anxiety. His amazing math teacher, Jennifer Willoughby, has been by his side since he started school 100%! She corresponds daily with me using REMIND on his assignments, tests etc. She even takes the time to talk to me on weekends if I have any questions about homework. My son has never had such a loving and caring teacher ever take the time out to help him! Mrs. Willoughby makes learning math fun & easy with step by step lessons (which she has even showed me!) My son comes home wanting to do math and he is finally learning!”
Congratulations, Mrs. Willoughby!
Every week during the school year WITN will recognize a Teacher of the Week on WITN News at Sunrise. The winner receives a plaque and $100 gift card for school supplies.
